The title above is taken for a made for TV movie from the 70's so I can not take credit for it being original. Because I have trouble spelling 'inconvenience' I did not choose that as the URL for this site. Instead I reworked a saying I have heard many times, "a new reality" and used that. A number of years ago, several people I know came back from Viet Nam using wheelchairs or other devices. I observed how much trouble they were having with the barriers, both architectural and societal that they had to deal with in their everyday lives. Just think of pushing a standard, for the day, E & J wheelchair in a race. This was before the days of titanium chairs. While I was living in Houston in the early 70's, there was a story in one of the local newspapers about two young men that had suffered spinal cord injuries and they were being "warehoused" in an old folks nursing home. The young people did not want to go to sleep at 9pm, so the medical doctor for the home wrote orders that they could be given sleeping pills to put them out. I am sure that this was unethical, and it made me angry when I read the story. I went to visit them and got involved with the beginnings of the independent living movement in Houston at that time. I worked in the field of logistics to put bread on the table, but have kept up my interest and involvement with the disabled community for many years. Each of us has to have something that we are passionate about in our lives so that we have a reason to get up each morning. Years ago, the receptionist in my office and I talked about going back to school and one day she came in and asked me for three checks. The next thing I knew I received paperwork from Corpus Christi State University admitting me to class the following semester. At that time, I started back to college and received a second BA this time in Psychology and went on to a MS is Counseling. Counseling was not a field of learning when I was in college the first time in the early 60's. At the present time, I am not licensed or practicing. The internet has allowed everyone to post a lot of information available to the general public. I have found that a lot of the information is scattered and not always set up with key words to bring it up on a search engine. My goal is to bring as much information together as I can so that the general awareness of the different communities will be elevated. Over the years, I have heard people tell me that they did not know that something was available to them. I want to make it so that anyone can find something that they are interested in and follow up on it with a link here. This site will always be "under construction" as I add more and more information as time goes on. If anyone has any links that can be added to the site, please let me know. email: webmaster@johnh98324.startlogic.com Site
